New Carer Spotlight: Meet Joy!

Are you curious about what it’s like to start a career in care? This blog post is for you! At Lakeland Care, we’re proud to have a dedicated team of carers who help our clients live independently and comfortably in their own homes. In our monthly blog series, Carer Spotlight, we shine a light on the incredible experiences of our carers—both seasoned professionals and those new to the role.

This month, we’re thrilled to introduce Joy, one of our incredible carers based in Barrow. With her bubbly personality, quick wit, and unwavering commitment to her clients, Joy has quickly become a cherished member of our team. Let’s get to know her a little better!

What made you want to join the Lakeland Care team? Was this always the plan, or did life take you in a surprising direction?

“I’ve spent the last 18 years caring for my son, and when the opportunity came up for me to go out to work, my daughter suggested I apply for Lakeland Care. She thought I’d be good at the job – and I’m so glad I did! It’s been a surprising and rewarding change of direction for me.”

What’s been the best part of being part of the team so far? Any stand-out moments?

“Because I spent so long at home caring for someone, it’s been amazing getting out and meeting new people and being part of a team. One standout moment? Oh, this one sticks with me! One Saturday morning, it was horrendous weather, and a car drove through a puddle, soaking me completely. I didn’t want to be late, so I carried on looking like a drowned rat. My clients found it absolutely hilarious—and seeing their laughter made it all worthwhile.”

Have you had a funny, heartwarming, or memorable moment “on the patch” that’s stuck with you?

“That puddle story is hard to beat for funny, but I’ve also had many heartwarming moments. Just listening to clients and sharing those little moments of joy can brighten both of our days. It’s incredible how much of a difference a simple conversation can make.”

What’s your secret trick for putting a smile on someone’s face during your day?

“My secret trick? Singing or dancing! Sometimes being a little silly and lighthearted is all it takes to lift someone’s spirits. And of course, just listening—truly listening—goes a long way, too.”

If you had to sum up your job in three words, what would they be—and why?

“Challenging because you don’t always know what you’re walking into. Uplifting because, even when you’re not quite feeling it yourself, seeing a client smile makes your day better. And rewarding because the impact I’ve been able to have on someone’s life makes me feel so proud to be part of this work.”

When you’re not out and about, how do you unwind or have a bit of fun? Any guilty pleasures?

“I’m a huge Barrow football fan and also coach a local girls’ football team. When I’m not on the pitch, I’m spending time with my family—they’re my world.”

We’re so lucky to have Joy as part of the Lakeland Care team. Her dedication, humor, and compassion are inspiring, and she brings so much positivity to our clients and colleagues alike. Thank you, Joy, for all that you do!
