At Lakeland Care, we believe in not just providing exceptional care, but also building meaningful connections with the people we support. This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight Mike, one of our amazing carers based in Barrow. Mike’s journey into care has been shaped by his natural caring nature and a desire to make a difference. With a background in the fast-paced world of cooking, Mike made a career change at 30 and found his true calling in care. His passion for helping others shines through in everything he does. His dedication, enthusiasm, and the personal touch he brings to his role truly embody the values we hold dear at Lakeland Care.
Meet Mike! He shares his journey into care, his favourite aspects of the job, and the rewarding moments that make a difference in his clients’ lives.
What does it mean to you to be a carer?
“Being a carer is a fun and rewarding job. It can be challenging, but each day is different, and you can really make a difference in someone’s life. It often feels like more than just a job because of the meaningful connections you build.”
Why/how did you get into caring?
“I always knew I wanted to be a carer, but it wasn’t until I was 30 that I got the chance. I had been a chef before and wanted a change. On my first day in care, I remember taking a gentleman out in his wheelchair, chatting about sheep, and feeling the sun on my face. I knew this was the job I had always wanted.”
What is your favourite aspect of the job?
“My favourite part is building a trusting relationship with clients and helping them achieve their goals. Whether it’s something simple like helping them with a shower, or something more complex like getting them to the gym, it’s rewarding to know I’ve made a positive difference in their lives.”
Have you done anything unusual or extra to help your clients?
“I’ve helped clients accomplish some incredible feats, like swimming 3.5 miles for charity, walking the length of Hadrian’s Wall, and canoeing on Windermere. One of the most special moments was helping a client enjoy lunch on a bench in public, something they’d never done before due to a life-changing injury. I’ve also helped a client with anxiety by hoovering behind a heavy sofa—small gestures, but they made a big difference.”
Why do you like working for Lakeland Care?
“Lakeland Care gives me the freedom to do what’s right for my clients. I can take the initiative and work with social workers to make sure we provide the best care. It’s a company that trusts its carers to make a difference.”
Do you have any advice for new carers?
“Take care of yourself first. It’s important to look after your own well-being so you can be there for your clients. And kindness is key. If you are kind, it will make everyone’s day a little better.”
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
“I have strong opinions about The Eagles, especially Randy Meisner’s contributions to the band’s harmony. I believe his input made them the iconic band they were, and that’s why their music after Hotel California never matched up.”
If you could be any animal, what would you be?
“I’d be a Mantis Shrimp because of their eyes—they can see 16 spectrums of colour, while we only see 2. It’s amazing!”
